Hornbill Systems Supports RSPB Campaign to Save Harapan Rainforest in Sumatra

August 23rd, 2007 -- Hornbill Systems aims to help save the endangered rhinoceros hornbill and over 60 other rare species of bird.

Hornbill Systems, the market leading Service Management solutions company, has announced its support of the high-profile campaign by its customer the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) to save Harapan Rainforest in central Sumatra, along with its globally threatened rhinoceros hornbill and over 60 other species of bird that are at risk of extinction. The RSPB is working with its sister organisation Burung Indonesia and community-based organisations as well as BirdLife International Partners from around the world to deliver this exciting initiative.

The emblem for Harapan Rainforest campaign, the rhinoceros hornbill is a large black and white-plumed bird that thrives in mature rainforest, making it a perfect symbol of the RSPB’s efforts to save a rainforest area two-thirds the size of London that is home to at least 267 different species of bird. Hornbill Systems is planning to undertake its own campaign among its customer base to encourage them to donate to the RSPB’s conservation cause in Central Sumatra’s rainforest.

Hornbill’s solutions enable organisations to automate business processes and provide first class customer service. The company will contact many of its customers to help highlight the work of the RSPB and to encourage donations. Each Hornbill customer will receive an RSPB-branded soft toy of a rhinoceros hornbill to help raise awareness of the plight of this spectacular bird, as well as the threat to dozens of others, if Harapan Rainforest is not saved. Hornbill is also keen to underline its own backing for the cause and its aims as a commercial enterprise to embody social responsibilities in its ethos as a company.

Gerry Sweeney, Managing Director of Hornbill Systems, said: “We work closely with our customers and aim to support them in every way that we can. When we heard about the plight of Harapan Rainforest and the hornbill in Sumatra, it clearly struck a chord and prompted us into action. Personally I feel strongly about the importance of conservation and I want this also to be reflected in the way we behave as a corporate enterprise.”

Mairi Dupar, Spokesperson for RSPB ,said: “We’re thrilled that Hornbill Systems, with whom the RSPB already has a successful working relationship, is promoting our Save the Sumatran Rainforest campaign to its customers. They’ll help us raise much-needed awareness, and hopefully additional donations, to safeguard one of the last remaining fragments of Sumatran lowland forest. We have called the forest ‘Harapan Rainforest’ after the Indonesian word for ‘hope’ and it is a unique and incredibly wildlife-rich habitat of global importance. Rhinoceros hornbills rely on mature, healthy trees to make their nestholes and rear young but forests such as these are under extreme threat from logging and burning. The RSPB’s initiative will give Hornbill Systems’ customers a direct opportunity to reverse the fortunes of this iconic species.”

To help it effectively run high profile worldwide campaigns such as the one for Harapan Rainforest, the RSPB needs to run its operations on leading technology, with full support and high levels of reliability and service. As a customer of Hornbill Systems since 2005, the RSPB uses Hornbill Supportworks for its IT service desk.

Hornbill Systems was able to deliver a customised IT helpdesk support system for the RSPB at a considerable saving over their previous system. This has enabled the RSPB to provide a more efficient faster service to its customers, using Supportworks’ user friendly, highly customisable interface and enabling the RSPB to manage the demand for IT support better.

About RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds)

The RSPB is the UK charity working worldwide to secure a healthy environment for birds and other wildlife, helping to create a better world. With over one million members, their work is driven by a passionate belief that we all have a responsibility to protect birds and the environment. Bird populations reflect the health of the planet on which our future depends.
The need for an effective bird conservation organisation has never been greater. Climate change, agricultural intensification, expansion of urban areas and transport infrastructure, and over-exploitation of our seas all pose major threats to birds.
